A Technical Overview

UNI 11988:2025 is an Italian national standard issued by UNI (Ente Italiano di Normazione). It defines the technical and operational requirements for Emergency Voice Alarm Communication (EVAC) systems interfaced with fire detection and fire alarm systems. Published in 2025, the standard provides a comprehensive framework to help ensure effective voice-based emergency communication in buildings.

Purpose and context

Traditional audible alarms (sirens or bells) may not provide sufficient guidance during emergencies, especially in complex buildings or crowded environments. UNI 11988:2025 addresses this gap by regulating systems that deliver clear, intelligible spoken messages to occupants – supporting faster, more orderly evacuations and reducing panic. The standard reflects modern fire-safety engineering principles and aligns with performance-based safety approaches.

Scope

The standard applies to newly designed and installed EVAC systems integrated with fixed fire detection systems. It covers the full lifecycle of these systems, including:

System design and acoustic planning

Installation and system integration

Commissioning and functional testing

Operation, inspection, and maintenance

Simple acoustic warning devices without voice functionality are explicitly excluded.

Key technical principles

UNI 11988:2025 places strong emphasis on speech intelligibility, system reliability, redundancy, and power-supply continuity during emergencies. It sets criteria for loudspeaker placement, zoning, message prioritization, and coordination with fire detection logic. Verification and testing procedures help ensure that system performance remains consistent over time.

Acoustic verification: what is measured on site

To confirm that voice messages are delivered effectively, verification activities typically include measuring sound pressure level (SPL) of EVAC messages at representative points, STIPA and RT60 inside acoustic areas (ADA) background noise levels (including building services when relevant), and checking the signal-to-noise margin that affects message clarity. Where needed, octave/third-octave band analysis helps identify frequency-related issues and supports corrective actions (e.g., loudspeaker tuning, zoning or placement adjustments). Test results should be recorded and reported to ensure repeatability over time and to support commissioning and periodic checks.

Applicability and value

Although voluntary in nature, UNI 11988:2025 represents recognized best practice in Italian fire-safety design. It is intended for fire-safety engineers, system designers, installers, building owners, and authorities having jurisdiction. Adoption of the standard supports regulatory alignment, enhances occupant safety, and improves emergency response effectiveness.

Conclusion

UNI 11988:2025 marks a significant step toward safer, more intelligible emergency communication in buildings. By standardizing EVAC system design, verification, and management, it contributes to higher levels of fire safety and more controlled, effective evacuations.

To support implementation of the new standard, Senseca’s XPT800 Class 1 sound level meter helps professionals verify EVAC acoustic performance through accurate measurements of message SPL and background noise, enabling consistent reporting and documentation of results in line with UNI 11988:2025.

Newborn within our solar radiation sensors, PYRAsense is a new family of pyranometers that brings solar radiation measurements to a higher level!

Depending on the model and according to ISO 9060:2018 and WMO recommendations, they are classified as:

PYRAsense10 – Spectrally Flat Class A

PYRAsense02 – Spectrally Flat Class B

PYRAsense03 – Spectrally Flat Class C

Based on a smart technology, specifically designed for this product line, all pyranometers are provided with internal diagnostic sensors to always keep the internal temperature, relative humidity, and pressure under control. Moreover, keeping an eye on the operating conditions of the sensors also allow to predict any maintenance work in advance, thus always ensuring reliable measurements.

Special attention has also been given to the ease of installation: the integrated bubble level remains visible even when the UV radiation protection screen is used. In addition, the pyranometer can optionally be equipped with a tilt sensor.

The GHM GROUP, a leading company in the field of flow, level, portable and environmental measurement technology, takes a further step towards internationalization: Its five brands will be merged into a single, agile company to respond quickly to customer needs and market trends.

Remscheid, 22 June 2023 – One company, one brand, one purpose: to become an enabler of a sustainable future. From 1 January 2024, the GHM GROUP, a leading sensor technology company, will become Senseca.

More than a rebranding project: the five GHM GROUP brands (Honsberg, Greisinger, Martens, Val.Co and Senseca) will combine their expertise to continue their success story within Senseca by maintaining the same entrepreneurial spirit as their founders.

‘The transition from a group with five brands to a single company is a major change in how we approach the market and develop our products’, says GHM GROUP CEO Christian Unterberger. In an ever-evolving world, we want to create an agile company that can respond quickly to customer needs and market trends’.

Senseca’s philosophy is clear and simple: place the customer at the heart of every decision and help them grow through an application-based approach. The new ‘One Face to the Customer’ focus is on simplification – translating into easy access to the entire product range and an improved customer experience.

‘Concentrating our efforts on a single brand, we can build stronger and longer lasting relationships with our customers, exploit synergies between sites and differentiate ourselves in a sometimes complex market’, says Stefan Langer, Vice President of the Industrial Business Unit.

The expertise of each brand is pooled in multidisciplinary teams working in three business units: Environmental, Industrial and Portable. People remain at the heart of the business, and their contribution of skills, knowledge and commitment will continue to be crucial to grasp the growth opportunities involved in this change.

‘Each of us bears a unique and complementary value, and it is only by adding these elements together that we can truly generate a positive impact on ourselves, on the people around us, and, in this case, on this new opportunity we are about to experience’, says Gianluca Maestroni, current CEO of Senseca and Vice President of the Environmental Business Unit.

The name Senseca is a neologism with several meanings. First and foremost, ‘sense’ stands for sensors, the core business of measuring, monitoring, testing and control equipment. But ‘sense’ also stands for the new shared purpose that sets Senseca’s future direction: ‘to provide reliable data and facts that enable businesses and society to improve the ecological and economic status quo with custom-made technology solutions.

‘At Senseca, we strive to safeguard our planet by balancing economic interests with environmental goals. There can be no economy without a healthy planet, and companies can make a vital contribution’, says Roland Baeuml, Vice President of the Portable Business Unit. We want to rise to this challenge and become a role model in sustainable measurement technology’.

Company profile

GMH GROUP is a leader in measurement technology. With sixty years of experience in equipment development and production, it provides customized processes and solutions for specific applications: measurement of level, flow, pressure, temperature, conductivity and industrial monitoring electronics for mechanical and plant engineering, HVAC, portable instruments and environmental technology. The group operates five innovative companies (Honsberg, Greisinger, Martens, Val.Co and Senseca) and employs over 300 people at five production sites.

Senseca is a registered trademark of the GHM GROUP CORPORATE. On 1 January 2024, the GHM GROUP with its five brands (Honsberg, Greisinger, Martens, Val.Co and Senseca) will be merged into a single agile company: Senseca.

The quality, stability and reliability of a microphonic preamplifier are fundamental in the process of acquiring accurate measurements of sound pressure levels.

The high impedance signal generated by precision microphones, which is very sensitive to the characteristics of the transmission cables, needs to be amplified and made compatible with the input specifications of professional measurement systems. The quality of transduction of this signal depends on the preamplifier, a fundamental element of the measurement chain.

To be sure you get the most out of your measurements, the new series of CCP / IEPE compatible preamplifiers and microphone sets are now available!

The new series are easy to integrate with other sensors into CCP based systems. Moreover, the standardized 2…20 mA power supply makes them compatible with most professional measurement systems and allow the use of two-wire common low cost cables with BNC connectors.

Therefore, flexibility and high accuracy at affordable cost are combined in just one product.

Besides the preamplifiers, also complete microphone sets are available. All available sets consist of a CCP preamplifier and a precision microphone with individual calibration and sensitivity values.

Faced with the fear of Covid-19, all over the world, researchers are focused on finding solutions and tools to fight the virus.

These include as well UV lamps and their capacity to inhibit viruses. According to recent studies, it appears that the application of UVC ultraviolet radiation used by the new LED lamps has proved to be highly effective.

The result is a significant increase in the market of UV LEDs available with a wavelenght centered around 265 and 275 nm which corresponds to the maximum germicidal efficiency range. If the sensitivity of the traditional UVC probes changes rapidly around 270 nm and makes them indicated for other UV light sources, our new LP471UVBC radiometric probe is the perfect solution for UV LED lights used for the verification of germicidal lamps in sterilization systems.

The LP471UVBC probe has a wider spectral range compared to traditional UVC probes and uses a special solar-blind photodiode with an appropriate filter provided with a diffuser. Used in combination with our portable luxmeters HD2302.0 or HD2102.2, you have a turnkey solution either you need to simply measure and read, or you need a more advanced solution with logging feature.

Moreover, the ISO 17025 Calibration Certificate, issued by our own accredited Photo-Radiometry laboratory, guarantees that your measurement are always correct and accurate.

The term Air Pollutants also known as Particulate Matter or PM it is used to indicate the mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. Some of these particles are large enough to be seen with naked eye but many other are so small and fine that can only be detected through specific instruments. Depending on the size, these can be divided in different ranges with the common factor that, once inhaled, they are responsible for a large variety of health disease to a lesser or greater degree.

Knowing the exact content of PM is of the utmost importance to follow the WHO air quality guidelines recommending exposure limits to key air pollutants and reduce their adverse health effect on human being.

Cost effective and reliable, PMsense is the perfect solution in smart city applications and environmental monitoring especially close to sources of PM such as construction sites, industrial activities, smokestacks, power plants, combustion engines, road traffic

Based on laser scattering measuring principle, PMsense ensures a very accurate reading of PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10 particle counts.

The configuration of the instrument and the reading of the measurements can be done via the RS485 serial output, both with the proprietary protocol and with the MODBUS-RTU protocol and the results are reported in μg/m³. In combination with one of our loggers, collected data are then sent via HTTP to the Senseca Cloud and therefore available on any device.

As a producer of Automatic Weather Stations, we also recognize the demand from the market in having PM measurement in combination with an AWS. The PMsense is ready to be fully integrated: simple and fast, plug and play without any further start up. By incorporating this measurement in AWS we can provide early warnings when air pollution is getting close to the danger zone.
